This is also not an anime but I talked about Avatar: The Last Airbender, I also need to talk about The Legend of Korra. This is really a more mature and darker show compare to Avatar. But the plot is similar, the Avatar is reincarnated and must master the four elements to protect the world.
The characters are also completely different people compare compare to before.
Korra
The waterbender who is the new reincarnation of the Avatar, in this case, Aang. She is headstrong and stubborn, not willing to yield to anyone. She is gifted in the elements, except for Air. In some cases, I feel like she is meant to be from a firebender family than waterbender. As a result, when trouble arise, she use her fists than words. Her animal guide is a polar bear dog by the name of Naga.
Mako
Yes, he is named after the deceased actor who played Iroh. However, he is a young and serious person who rarely jokes. The reason: he grew up in difficult situations, his parents died, he lives with only his younger brother, and was affiliated with a gang. Even through these difficulties, he tries to do the right thing.
Bolin
In essence, he is suppose to be the Sokka of the group. He is the funny character who sometimes acts a bit too dumb for me. However, he is innocent person who tries to do his best for his family and friends. Unlike his older brother Mako, he is a Earth bender (inter-bending parents). His pet is a fire ferret, Pabu, who is always with him.
Asami
The beautiful daughter of the founder of Future Industries. Even though she is rich, she knows how to defend herself and fight. She is a strong and independent girl who loves her father but will also do whatever is right. Her mother died because of benders, but she does not have any ill intention for them. Instead she tries to get along with everyone.
Tenzin
The youngest son of Aang and Katara, his family consist of airbenders. As the airbending Teacher to Korra, he has a difficult time, but he tries his best. Their interaction is like a father and a rebellious teenage daughter. I feel like Tenzin is what makes the show funny, even though he looks like a serious and wise person.
These are the few characters in the show, there are actually more characters that others can be fond of. It is nice how the show does not mimic the characters from the Avatar show. This show stands by itself, without using references from the show.
The overall plot was interesting, especially how the villain is different and fear he emits. Some of the topics of the show are deep and well done. However, I was annoyed with the love line in the story. Mostly frustrated with Mako...However, with the addition of three more seasons the story will probably progress to be better.
The music of the show is decent, similar to the Avatar but yet different. There is a bit more jazz kind of music than a traditional theme. As a result, the music does fit with the shows setting and mood. Again the opening and theme is not a song, but it was beautifully done.
The animation is well done, a bit more mature looking compare to the Avatar. However, there are some awkward scenes such as some of the expressions of the characters. The background is beautiful but not really amazing. Again, it looks like a quick painting. With the fighting style, it is also a bit different, a bit more quick and more flexible. Also they invented a new sport, which reminds me of wrestling and boxing.
The show is well done, the beginning does grab your attention and as the story progresses it gets more interesting. Even though there are a few annoying parts, as a whole, it is a great show.
The show in its last moments was an eye opener. Just everything that happens in the finale just changed my mindset of the characters. How a child upbringing influences everyone. In a way, your parents will influence how you will grow up. Another issue that pop out to me was suicide. Really what tv series, meant for kids, show suicide, not many. But when comparing it to Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra falls a short. But with new season coming up, the story will take a new turn.
